I heard through the grapevine that an old Polish steam train was about to arrive in Sofia and the nice people at BDZ railways were offering train trips for the common folks. The tickets were first serve first arrive at the Sofia office with no online orders available. I emailed and pleaded with one of the ticket folks over email, used the ‘I am a Canadian tourist’ trump card and our $2 tickets were put on hold at the Sofia office (Bulgarians are the nicest people on the planet). The 30-minute trip choo choo’ed from Sofia Main Station to the beautiful town of Bankya. Once we disembarked we had over an hour to explore this quaint little place. It’s a relatively affluent town with beautiful parks, ‘medicinal’ hot springs, fancy villas and pretty people (it’s also the home of the previous Prime Minster).
